111th Congress and the Stink Bug Party

The 111th Congress finished their business over the past few days, and it reminds me of the odor that you get when a toilet gasket fails. Yes, they created quite a stink.

The American People spoke loudly on November 2, 2010. I was one of them. We screamed at our leaders telling them that we didn't want anymore out-of-control spending.

We told them we didn't want earmarks.

We told them that we didn't like stinky politics.

Well, my buddy Dan Gray, who operates a very cool car review website called MpgOMatic.com, created a very fitting video back this summer about what happened the past five weeks.

Fortunately the Stink Bug Party is over in Washington DC. Many of the stink bugs have been put into bottles, they've been capped, and shipped back to their districts.

Unfortunately I will not be able to go down to Washington for the swearing in of our three new representatives. I have mailed Frank Guinta a letter about three weeks ago because I could not find an E mail address to get in touch with him. I have not gotten an answer yet. I hope that will not be the case with any of the NH reps after they take office. I for one will be watching like a hawk to see they walk the constitutional line. I hope that one of the first things that they tackle is the border. Unless that is shut tight and legal imigration resumes then nothing can be done with the question regarding those that are here. We need imigration, but we are a nation of laws and it must be the legal way. Regarding the start treaty, what did the US gain??? By the way, it seems that my health insureance cost is going to take a substantial increase in 2012. It also looks like it can be placed right at the feet of this Heath care bill. Boy, what a terric piece of legislation.

Bob Neveux on December 24, 2010 8:23 AM

Tim,
I partially agree with what you are saying about the stink bug party. Unfortunately we were not able to get rid of all of the guilty stink bugs.
We are have to keep up the pressure on our elected repesentatives in Washington to make sure that they do what they were elected to do. One of the biggest problems that I see is making sure that they do not fall into the trap that most polaticions fall into that is complationcy. This problem is brought on by allowing them to stay in office too long. I would like to hear your opinon on this because I do not know how to correct this problem.

Michael LaMonda on December 24, 2010 8:32 AM

Tim, you certainly do have a lot of interesting friends. How To Remove Stink Bugs is a great video, thanks for sharing it. It's implication obviously goes beyond the actual Stink Bug.
This reminds me of how I learned to get rid of unwanted Palmetto Bugs (really big roaches), while I was living in Florida. When you finish off a jar of peanut butter don't scrape the inside of the jar too clean. Set it where you might find these big bugs at night. When you check the jar the next morning it will be full of the things. I don't know how it works, but they will not be able to get out of the jar. Simply do as Dan did, screw on the lid and dispose of the buggers.

Merry Christmas to you and your family Tim. Thank you for allowing freedom of expression on your blog.

We celebrate Christmas as well. My wife's kids are back home from college and we are all very excited to be together again. Having a hybrid family has its challenges, but it's all good.

There will be no political punditry from me until after the new year. :)

I bid peace and love for all this holiday season.

Lou on December 24, 2010 10:05 AM

I think we will have to keep the pressure on Washington. A one time beating will not stop the nonsense. Some of the Republicans have been in office and in bed with the Liberals for way too long. I think we will have to continue to oust them after 8 years in office and I believe we need to vet the candidate for president a lot closer in the next election. I believe we need to put the pressure on Congress to find out about Obama's birth, life at school, find people who actually went to school with him and where they went. Then some things can be put to bed one way or the other. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Together we can build our nation up, divided it will fall.

Sarah Tabor on December 24, 2010 11:43 AM

Merry Christmas ! Thank God that the lame duck is over. It was just sickening wasn't it. I was not impressed with the Republicans allowing themselves to be rolled by the radicals. Let's all pray that the new group stands against the Obama socialism and stops the maddness that has happened in the past two years.

Chris Long on December 24, 2010 12:20 PM

I am still wary of the folks that we elected. Do they "Get It" with "It" being the fact that they need to poll the people they represent before they vote? Apparently the 6 Republicans that voted in favor of the START treaty did not "Get It". Hopefully they read the treaty before they voted on it. But probably not. Politics has always been a "scratch my back and I will scratch yours" kind of operation. You are right, some of the Republicans that are in office right now will not be in office after the 2012 elections and hopefully Obama will be a one-time president provided we can prevent the passage of the "Dream Act". Take care and have a Merry Christmas and I hope a better New Year for all but I am not counting on that. By the way, my health care cost increased as well.

Gerald Davis on December 24, 2010 12:42 PM

To everyone, I highly recommend that you watch "It's a Wonderful Life" during the holiday season. Even if you've seen it years ago, and even if it's after Christmas, it's not too late. I think a lot of folks here would benefit from seeing it. I watch it just about every year at this time, and I benefit from it too, every time.

In addition, I recommend the Alastair Sim 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol". It's a classic; and even though it's old, it's still the best version of the movie. It tells the full story as written by Charles Dickens better than any of the others.

Lou on December 24, 2010 2:11 PM

Thank you Tim Carter for what we think is standing up for liberty! Keep up the good work and have a very Merry Christmas!

Maynard E. on December 24, 2010 6:05 PM

Getting rid of the 'stink bugs' is a good idea, but now we need to implement that in real life.

Is CONgress the opposite of PROgress?

snert on December 24, 2010 7:02 PM

Tim,
Thanks a Million (or should I say TRILLION) for all you promote/espouse. I agree completely.
The "new" Congress - most especially the GOP members, need to remember back to the "Dog chasing Car" story. The dog chased many a car that came down his street - barking loudly and ferociously. Low and behold, one day the dog caught up with a car as it rolled to a stop. At that point the dog had NO IDEA as to what he was going to do next - and the car drove off - leaving the dog wondering "What happened?!?!"

The soon-to-be-installed Congress had better have a SOLID plan and institute it with determination and tenacity. The Dems managed to ramrod more into the past 60 days than anyone thought possible - much to our surprise/disappointment. I am disgusted with the way the current GOP congressionals folded - handing the Dems practically everything they wanted. The New Congress has a mandate - if they fail, then BHO and his cronies will recover from this past election and will take back control of Congress and get BHO re-elected. At that point, BHO has nothing to lose and the ensuing four years will make his first four look like a Cub Scout Meeting! America as we have known it will be Going, Going, GONE.

Is it me? The feeling that our way of life is morphing into something that is frightening as our freedoms and liberties and other core foundations are being eroded almost daily. The forces behind this are relentless and very powerful....for to me, this is literally, a war for which America will survive come 2012. There currently is no potential candidate on the radar that does not have potential baggage that would certainly be exploited...not on the issues themselves, but with outright evil. Some, are lightening rods for outright hatred for reasons unknown only but to God...The remaining appear mediocre and do not seem to be charismatic or portray passion.
Regarding this..All I know .....we must unite as never before for the war we appear to be heading, will be which for which America will survive.
May Almighty God Watch over and Bless America
Merry Christmas to all of good will.

Richard on December 25, 2010 6:48 AM

Merry Christmas to all of good will.
I would like to share with any, my thoughts and hopes, premature as they may appear, and sure many may not agree, but it 'My'overall feelings expressed, that is the body and core of my thoughts, I sent to my new State Senator form Florida.
Dear Senator Rubio.
Yes, I am a supporter from Florida, that makes me biased, so be it. Please Senator Rubio, as in Roman times when someone was granted a 'Triumph' (Parade of honor) after a major campaign. It is speculative.... a slave held a gold wreath above the honoree's head whispering: "Respice te, hominem te memento" ("Look behind you, remember you are only a man") and "Memento mori" ("Remember (that you are) mortal").as the procession wand around the streets of Rome..
Washington is corrupt, and to those susceptible. Please resist the corruption in Washington, hold to the values you hold dear, not only for self, your family, but for this nation...America....There exists men of honor already there ..you must seek them out. Although not currently among those present,...one in particular I admire is Newt Gingrich for his knowledge of American history, his vast political experience, and his communication skills, his honor, his values, and his Love, expressed for America itself.

Is it me? The feeling that our way of life is morphing into something that is frightening as our freedoms and liberties and other core foundations are being eroded almost daily? The forces behind this are relentless and very powerful....For me, this is literally, a war for which America will survive come 2012 There currently is no potential candidate I see on the radar that does not have potential baggage that would certainly be exploited...not on the issues themselves, but with outright evil. Some, are 'lightening rods' for outright hatred for reasons unknown only but to God...The remaining appear mediocre and do not seem to be charismatic or portray enough passion.
Senator Rubio, some would say it is not your time, for you lack the experience to run as President of The United States of America...but, then again, what where President Barack Obama's? The president, left his newly elected senatorial seat where he had as accomplishements many more present only voting record than actual votes recorded, and also voted the most left of center ever as a state senator it is here he left his active senatorial duties to run for president...before that, a community organizer attorney for Acorn. Think about those facts.

Can America wait until 2016? For if President Barack Obama is re-elected, America's fate will be sealed forever.
....Could you be another potential ... a John F. Kennedy?

We must unite as never before, for the war we appear to be heading, will be which America will survive..President Barack Obama's view, or an America based on over 230 years of recorded history and Constitution, as it was written?

Richard on December 25, 2010 8:34 AM

The saddest thing to me is that so many Americans just don't get it. Changing the gatekeepers is not the answer we need to educate Americans as to what they are giving up with a paternalistic government.

Alexis de Tocqueville nailed the paternalistic state as an “immense and tutelary power, which takes upon itself alone to secure (for the populace) gratifications and to watch over their fate.” The state then provides “for their security, foresees and supplies their necessities, facilitates their pleasures, manages their principal concerns, directs their industry, regulates the descent of property and subdivides their inheritances.” The trade-off for this is that such a government then becomes “the sole agent and the only arbiter of that happiness.”

We have seemingly chosen the path that de Tocqueville describes but now are fearing that a government big enough to supply all our needs is big enough to take all we have. A government that is still growing like a cancer and eating our tissue.

Ed Taylor on December 25, 2010 1:26 PM

Merry Christmas to you and your family Tim! I haven't been able to respond lately as it is our busiest time at work. I am in the transportation/trucking end of the airfreight industry. I agree that the pursuit of change has to be relentless. Once again we witness our fuel/diesel sky rocket. Yet we cannot find any department that can justify or explain this. So as a small business this deeply hurts our bottom line. We must give a notice to the people we do work for of our increased fuel surcharge. So for the time being we eat it. Just another injustice thrust upon a small business.

Ross on December 25, 2010 7:50 PM

I agree with Ed Taylor....so many AMERICANS are just not getting it.......I was just talking to a friend of mine this past week and she thinks Obama is doing a good job !!!!! I said oh yea.....did you get a senior raise last year and are you getting one this year and she said no.....and I said and you think he's doing a good job ?????? she didn't know what to say......this is my gripe with him and I'm sticking to it.....I feel like he could have done something about it..... the bill passed for the unemployed and I'm glad, they needed that since they can't find a job, and most would rather be working that depending on that check every month......so where was Obama when the seniors C.O.L.A. came about......like I said before, cut somewhere else.....take care of your seniors first.....I'm reading Laura Bush's "SPOKEN FROM THE HEART" and she mentions that the U.S. gave Afghanistan more than 30 million in economic aid, and the U.S. doesn't even take care of their own people.....something is wrong here !!!! and by 1960 the Russians had given 300 million to Afghanistan .....come on you people what is Afghanistan doing for us ?????? 30 million...........do you know what the U.S. could have done with all that money m???????

Mona Greer on December 26, 2010 9:11 PM

Sorry, forgot to put the year that the U.S. gave 30 million to Afghanistan...was from 1955 to 1957.....

Mona Greer on December 26, 2010 9:14 PM

Merry Christmas Tim and thanks for the Firepit. Although I am not as far over to the right side as most posters here I appreciate the forum and a chance to hear thoughts and opinions on where this great country stands today. It does provide some comic relief at times with some of the very misguided and just plain wrong statements that are made and also some very thoughtful and introspective ideas that flow but that's the beauty of it and hopefully what inspires some to respond and speak out. I look forward to 2011 and all that it will bring and hopefully with a republican controlled congress and a sitting democratic president we'll see some bipartisanship play out to get things heading in the right direction. From the deficit to immigration reform to Afganistan we should all be pulling in the same direction to get the US back on track. To quote Teddy Roosevelt "Its not the ctitic who counts, the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena". Have a safe and happy new year!

Tom Angell on December 29, 2010 11:33 AM

I hope you realize that what is going on in Congress is NOT a new thing. Watch the movie "The Distinguished Gentleman." This same stink has been going on for years and years; you just care now because you think this particular administration stinks worse ... for whatever reasons.

patricia on January 1, 2011 3:49 PM

Well, Skippy, get over your embarrassment, because there are quite a few of us who never thought we'd be having to ask why the hell the guy who is sitting in the White House has never disclosed ANY PAPERWORK about his past. No college transcripts, no medical records, no tax returns, and the list goes on. I daresay that all of the other candidates in all the other presidential races have done so, and there would be such a stink raised (speaking of STINK BUGS) if anyone else had had the temerity to do what Obama did. Especially a Republican. Doesn't this raise ANY red flags with you at all? If anyone is the Manchurian President, HE is! (From a former Liberal Democrat who woke up one day and realized that she'd been drinking the wrong flavor of Kool-Aid for toooo long! But yes, it's ALL Kool-Aid--it's politics, after all)

Susan on January 1, 2011 5:13 PM

Tim--I am glad that you have put together this blog for all of us to read (and of course, comment upon). Congratulations on your move to the Granite State, where Freedom and Liberty are not just cute names of someone's Golden Retrievers--they are actual working, living concepts that our Founders valued so highly that they sacrificed their lives and fortunes for them. "Live Free or Die" is the motto of your new home state--and we all should give that some serious thought as our nation slides further and further into a socialist sleepwalk. God bless you, your family, and your business!!

Susan on January 1, 2011 5:22 PM

China has just passed Japan as the second largest consumer market. I pray, that we will not soon be surpassed by China, too. Where has patriotism and pride in our country gone? We gave many large companies economic support recently only to have them continue to add job overseas, while cutting more jobs, here. I insist that my husband buy Purdy paint brushes, which cost more, since they are made in the here. The immigration issue has gotten so out of hand. We now have illegal immigrants marching for their rights. Some sanity has to return for the United States to again be the leader of the world.

Emily Moss on January 1, 2011 6:35 PM

As a Canadian observer whose country is as divided in many ways as yours seems to be; I feel that the feeling of entitlement, whether it be by the un and underempoyed or "the waiting for the folks to die" boomers is at the root of much of our countries discontent. If you earn it good if not shut the eff up and start earning it.The chinese are winning because they try harder.

roy on January 1, 2011 11:21 PM

Bring back America; buy American products.Close the borders. Illegal is illegal-is that simple enough? Anchor babies are an illegal excuse to gain government subsidized housing, food and medical care while taking jobs away from Americans. Fine companies and individuals who hire illegals; it is a crime; enforce it!
Reduce the perks that our congressional leaders get through our taxes. If they truly want to represent our country they should be responsible instead of squandering and taking advantage of it. America show your colors! Support our troops and put our country first!

Nodak on January 2, 2011 11:47 AM

How about if all you patriots and deficit hawks start by paying for the war?
Then boycott Walmart and stop buying products from the commie Chinese or do you support Communism?
What a bunch of hypocrites.
