Thanksgiving 2009 Newsletter
This was supposed to be a very short initial newsletter, but as I started to write, things got out of control. As it turns out, I have some important news to share. At first, I simply wanted to thank you, here on Thanksgiving, for subscribing to my Fire Pit. We all have much to be thankful for, but as I reflect on what's happening right now, we can't sit back and rest. Too many people are trying to tell you and I how we should live our lives. Our choices in everything are being restricted each day. Each new law that is passed erodes your liberties and mine. We must stop this madness.

Saturday Night Live and President Obama
Saturday Night Live (SNL) has been around for just about as long as I've been married. This late-night comedy show usually isn't bashful about making fun of politicians. But NBC, the network that SNL runs on, is pretty much the lap dog of the current Obama administration. After the open that aired on November 21, 2009, I'll bet the NBC executives got a call from the White House.

Senate Health Care Bill Vote
Yesterday, November 21, 2009, the US Senate voted 60 - 39 in favor of starting a debate about their version of the Health Care Bill. To get to that point, at least two moderate Senators were bribed.

Health Care Bill Passed Revisited
Right now we're at an historic tipping point. Within the past ten days the House of Representatives, in a narrow vote, passed the Health Care Bill. A few days later there were articles in papers all about what was in the Bill that was voted on. The reason for the delay is because it took that long for the editors and reporters to digest the 1,990 pages of the bill. Can you believe that?

Government Spending
The inspiration for the format of this special issue came a few days ago from one of my long-standing subscribers, Dave Albright. I had just sent out a regular newsletter and Dave opened one of his two copies. When I read his email response, I did one of those V-8 Juice forehead slaps. Here's just part of what Dave wrote:

An Online Press Conference
I want to share with you today a project I'm working on. Here's the problem we've had for over a hundred years. The message you and I've received from the media can always be filtered. Politicians thrive in this cloaked environment. Imagine how expensive it is for you, on your own, to spread the word in printed form about what your representatives are doing or saying to you in response to your questions. The Internet has changed all that. You can start to hold your own online press conference just as I'm doing.

Health Care Bill Passed
Lately, I often think I could devote the entire newsletter to what's going on around us. I'm stunned by the behavior of many of the lawmakers up in Washington, DC. They don't seem to be listening to us, We the People. I'm convinced they'll get the message a year from now, as the mid-term elections will have concluded. I'll make the prediction now: It will be an historic election for sure.
