John Kerry Senator, Tax Evader and Hypocrite
John Kerry, the US Senator from Massachusetts, seems to be just like the rest of us. He hates to pay high taxes. But he tends to support legislation that increases or forces others to pay more in taxes of all types. Can you guess what Senator John Kerry did when he purchased his new $7 million yacht?
My good friend Cory Newhouse alerted me to a story on the Yahoo News website about how Senator Kerry is avoiding about $500,000 in taxes by docking his new yacht in neighboring Rhode Island instead of a berth in his home state of Massachusetts.
To add insult to injury, the boat was built in New Zealand, not by skilled USA labor. What do all you Massachusetts union boat builders have to say about that? Heck, you can be a union worker anywhere in the USA that's unknowingly donated your hard-earned money, in the form of your union dues, to John Kerry's re-election efforts. I'll bet you're steamed, just like the mussels that will be served to Kerry's friends and guests on the Isabel.
What's ironic about this event is that his home state of Massachusetts is in deep financial trouble facing a budget deficit of close to $1 billion this year. It appears that Kerry feels it okay for all the other MA citizens to carry this water, even though he's probably one of the richest residents in Massachusetts and can easily afford to pay the taxes due.
It doesn't matter if you're liberal, conservative or somewhere in between on this issue. Surely you're sick of politicians who say one thing and expect us to toe the tax line, but when it comes to them they find a loophole or flat out ignore the law. I can't wait to read your comment if you're going to come to Kerry's defense.
Tim,
Excellent post.
As a private citizen I see nothing wrong with Senator Kerry has done. It is our patriotic duty to avoid taxes, legally of course, and to find loopholes. Buying a boat, or anything else for that matter, from a foreign manufacturer is also our right.
On the other hand, as a public official, with his record on taxes, I see the hypocracy – BIG TIME.
On the other hand, again, I don’t see the rationale in requiring him to bail out Massachusetts either because he is a public official or because he is rich.
The people of Massachusetts are of course free to vote him out but they won’t. We have the best government that money can buy!!
RESPONSE from Tim Carter:
John, I think what I was trying to say is that Senator Kerry says one thing to his constituents - and to us when he was running for President - then seemingly does the exact opposite.
I agree that he did nothing illegal. He has the right like you or I to make purchasing and docking decisions. But his voting record is one that clearly supports the redistribution of wealth. However, he seems to want to keep his hands on as much of his and his heiress wife Theresa.
I feel that's pretty insincere. If he was a nobody, not in the news, had no transparent voting record on tax issues, it wouldn't be a story.
John C on July 24, 2010 3:39 PMI love it when Liberals support Capitalism and lower taxes. Look how Senator Kerry has proven our point. The lower taxes in Rhode Island has drawn his business there. It's true that Rhode Island might receive lower taxes, however, the docking fees, the maintenance work, the suppliers, the caterers, and all the other associated work now goes to the resident workers in Rhode Island. That now leaves his constituents, the people of Massachusetts "high and dry" (so to speak). Bottom line......lower taxes....more work...more income...Higher taxes and more unemployment....Thank you Senator Kerry for illustrating that......
Bill K. on July 26, 2010 1:16 PMtim this is a fine example of kerry's lack of personal honor. he says one thing and does something else. do as i say not as i do. it's a shame that people like this are able to convince voters with lies and then spend a lifetime in office making policy for the rest of us. if kerry had any integrity he would not try to evade the laws that he helped pass. it just goes to show that even john kerry knows that he's wrong.

herman d on July 26, 2010 2:40 PMJust another typical liberal elite looking down on the masses. We "rank and file" Americans matter little to those of his ilk. We're only here to pay for the promises and failures they legislate with our dwindling financial resourses.Please...REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!
David F. on July 26, 2010 10:07 PMDid the LOCAL MASS. news talk about Kerry parking his yacht in Rhode Island?
If people continue to vote for Kerry, there is something wrong. He has probably done other stuff, but the media wasn't telling anything they didn't have to.
erin on July 27, 2010 1:27 PMTruly unbelievable. How do all of these hypocritical incumbent politicians continue to be re-elected again, and again, and again? I suppose Kerry will talk his way out of this deal as well.
