Need a Job? Create Your Own - Here's How
I was eating breakfast alone this first day of 2011. I didn't mind it as I eat breakfast alone virtually every day as I'm a morning person and Kathy is a night owl like her dad.
My thoughts drifted to how it's going to be a fantastic year for us. I know it because I just hired a new chief technology officer for my websites. He's a fantastic person. Now that my move to New Hampshire is over, I'm able to focus entirely on my businesses.
But then I immediately thought of you. Perhaps you're one of the millions of unemployed. You need a job. You have skills and desire, but are lost because there doesn't seem to be any work out there.
I was paging through a magazine of my daughter's and ran across an article of two moms, Kristen and Greta, who started their own online business two years ago. They created a site called LayerCakeShop.com. Read about them.
The first step of their journey was to just sell seven items on a website called Etsy.com. You don't need any Internet skills to have your products selling there. That went so well, they decided to break away and build their own site.
Do you have knowledge about something? A hobby? Do you have passion for a topic? Do you want to start selling things like Kristen and Greta and don't know where to start?
I've decided to help you. I've had an online business since 1995. In 1999, I was invited to be one of the charter members of a new very secret online entrepreneur group.
I reached out several hours ago to this group that I network with. They suggested that you seriously consider SiteBuildIt.com. This is a one-stop shop for all your needs if you know nothing about creating an online business.
Understand that if you do sign up with them, the link above is an affiliate link. That means I get a very small commission from SiteBuildIt.com for referring you to them. The Federal Trade Commission requires I disclose this. I have no problem with that, because I know that the folks at SiteBuildIt.com will take care of you.
Go ahead, mimic what I do each day online. I make my own hours. I love to work, if you want to call it that. I can even work laying in my hammock, sitting on my deck or sitting down by the lake's edge.
You can to. You can do what Kristen, Greta, I and hundreds of thousands do each day. You can create your own job in this New Year and get your personal economy and our national economy going again.
Forget about waiting on the government. Just do it yourself! Heck, I'm a huge DIY guy. The only thing holding you back is yourself. Like they say in the Nike commercials:
You can do this. You CAN sell things online. I've been selling products online since 1996. It was so hard to do back then, you simply can't believe it. Now it's easy.
If you want the Easy Button to short circuit what Kristen and Greta have done, then you need to go to SiteBuildIt.com.
Thanks for thinking of us, Tim.
Dwight Havens on January 1, 2011 4:51 PMThanks for the info Tim.....my daughter and I talked about doing something together.....just don't know what !!!! I will let her know about this and we can check it out.....for sure you can't sit back and wait on the government.....and they sure don't do anything for the seniors LOL....thanks again
Mona on January 1, 2011 6:59 PMNo, no. You got it right. I want the political blogs. I read your building/home repair hints, but my heart is on saving this great nation from its rush toward socialism. Thanks for your work in this direction. ee
Edna Earle on January 1, 2011 7:46 PMTim, I'm with Edna; keep the political ones coming. I read your newsletter each time it hits my inbox, but most of the stuff you talk about is what I talk about on air each week and is also what I do for a living. If we are to keep this nation from going the way of Europe, we need to all speak out loudly saying, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more!"
Handyman Bob on January 1, 2011 9:48 PMYour Ask the Builder newsletter each time it comes. Please continue to send me the political newsletter. I am a veteran, a retired preacher, and a retired teacher. Mostly, I am a proud citizen of the US who is very worried as we head toward Socialism and down the tube.
Harry Anderson on January 1, 2011 10:36 PMTim, I'm so glad you "goofed" and sent me the Fire Pit email. I didn't know about your blog. I'll be reading it from now on. Sounds like we think alike politically.
Happy New Year!
Charlie Ross on January 1, 2011 10:51 PMMe too. I see great minds think alike. I've been enjoying your "Ask the Builder" Blog for quite sometime now. I would look forward to spending some time at the Fire Pit as well if you don't mind.
CT on January 1, 2011 11:03 PMI too want to echo my thanks for sending me the wrong email. I am an Ask the Builder reader; now I have something else to think through. Thanks Tim for the mistake. It must have been meant to be.
Cory McIntyre on January 2, 2011 12:10 AMI am with Harry Anderson! I too am glad you goofed and sent me the Fire Pit Email. We think alike! Keep those emails coming! Thank you very much.
Tom Yazzie on January 2, 2011 12:18 AMTim,
Happy New year!
Like Charlie Ross I'm happy that you sent me your Fire Pit email by mistake.
ainla suplina on January 2, 2011 12:34 AMI got the "goof" email as well and will be back to read more on this site. I've been putting off building my website for Graphic Design (sounds funny, huh?!) and now I have added a bigger need for a website - creating a big sewing room to start a handbag business first and foremost. This article coincides with putting the "build a website" on my Year Goal List just a few hours ago. (more of that below)
My daytime paying job will end soon. I need to be prepared to be self sufficient with the two home-based businesses I'm preparing to start.
I'm also challenging myself to participate in a new Organizing Your Life type of thing so that I can handle ALL that is on my plate. I found a great Free Priority and Organizer Diary to download and fill out. Everyone struggling with organizing their time should check it out: http://www.facebook.com/GetOrganizedWizard?v=app_10442206389 (I'm not affiliated with it in any way - just feel Blessed to have found it and see that it WILL work for me!)
My biggest challenge holding me back has been my old 1920's house that is screaming for help. I need to be reading more of your initial emails that I signed up for! =) After putting my most important project on hold for 6 months, the Free Organizer Diary listed above has helped me break down ALL the task - one by one - and think about realistic time it will take to get each job done. Two rooms with many task so that I can get the big combined sewing/computer/design room and supply/storage room ready for Creating and Selling Product! The entire month of January is filled out, and I am praying that I have the energy to pull it all off. All the other rooms will have to wait for a few more months to consider starting!
Thanks for the "goof" email. Looking forward to more of your insight on this side of your life!
Kelly Lamb on January 2, 2011 12:39 AMI guess I'm one of those who got the goof 'firepit' msg. Also never realized you had a political blog as I've recently become most interested in the politics seeing our country slowly being dragged into socialism. Decided I've got to get involved. So reading this firepit msg was fuel for the fire, as well as the link to getting organized from Kelly as that is my number one priority and with so much around and not knowing where to start-- so log onto that I will do. My New Year's resolution? Be a daily reader of Tim Carter's political blog. Hope to meet you someday at one of our NH gettogethers as the onslaught of interested presidential candidates begin to arrive. For example, Ovide Lamontage will be hosting Rick Santorum at his home on the 11th in Manchester. All are invited.
COMMENT BY Tim Carter:
Patrice,
Thanks for your kind words. I'm going to be attending an organizational meeting of the Lakes Region Tea Party at the Moultonboro Library on January 10th at 6:30 pm. I wish I could go to Ovide's house the next day, but I'll be in Florida starting to attend the massive Builders Show convention.
Perhaps you can come up to Moultonboro if you want to meet up.
patrice on January 2, 2011 2:17 AMThank You for the mistake! I too am frustrated with the political situation in America and California especially. I should move to New Hampshire. As least I will be able to see the Stars. Appreciate your political blog, and your builders letters.
Ron Shrewsbury on January 2, 2011 3:32 AMThanks for the tips TIM ,wish you happy new year 2011 and yearrrrrrrrs to come!
kaldoun on January 2, 2011 11:45 AMThanks for the spam Tim! Perhaps a divine mistake for all of us who feel benefited by it. Keep it coming. :-)
Tom on January 2, 2011 1:49 PMYes Tim: 1/2/11, I need a job, Yes Tim, I hate the one I have, If I had my where withall I would start a bussiness called getting my life back, Thankyou.
bin on January 2, 2011 5:01 PMWow. I hope your thinking on home improvement and repair is more sound than your unpatriotic, right wing reactionary political crap. If you can't figure out how to handle a mailing list why should anyone trust your advice on handling tools? Keep your BS out of my mailbox and keep your paranoid, 50s mentality out of our government.
COMMENT BY Tim Carter:
Mark,
I explained in my Tolerance post exactly what happened. In fact, I wrote that column in part because of responses like yours. It was a software glitch or call it a mistake.
The bottom line is that we all make them, right? But it appears you have a near zero, or a zero, tolerance for mistakes. If so, that might come back to haunt you one day when you make your next one - mistake that is.
Mark on January 3, 2011 9:30 AMIs starting a business as easy as just getting a website? Do you have to have a business license or permit? What about taxes? If I start an online business, what happens to my unemployment I'm currently receiving? A lot of people tell those of us on unemployment we should create our own job, but no one addresses these issues.
Bill on January 3, 2011 9:34 AMI too am glad you sent me the FirePit Blogs. I sure don't agree with everything you say but I appreciate the perspective. I think the politicians in general are the root of the problem and I find much fault with both sides. They have become like pro athletes, they are all in it for the money. Getting elected in this country is the fastest route to becoming a millionaire on a medium salary!
paul on January 3, 2011 12:33 PMTim, Thanks for the "goof-up" I'm adding my name to the list of subscribers. I happen to own 30 acres in that big black spot in Washington- I can read by the stars at night and can see the Milky Way even when the moon is out most nights.
Mark on January 3, 2011 11:43 PMI wholeheartedly agree. I gave up the office gig several years ago and have been doing freelance online writing and affiliate marketing since then. Was it easy? No. Were there hungry times? Yes. But I think I've turned the corner now and I'm master of my own ship.
Kelly on January 4, 2011 10:00 AMThanks so much for this blog, I did not know that you have one!
Edward Alvarez on January 4, 2011 1:00 PMI am without a job and find out about IMBIT, I am so happy that I am going to give it a try
God bless
Edward Alvarez, Alabama
Hi Tim. I am also glad that I got the firepit news. I look forward to reading your insights in future issues. Keep em comming.
Tim Matthysse on January 7, 2011 10:23 AMHi Tim. Like everyone else I'm glad to have received the Fire Pit News by mistake. I immediately subscribed for it and look forward to future issues.
Johnny Rister on January 7, 2011 1:05 PM". . .unpatriotic, right wing reactionary political crap. . ."??? Tim, it's comments like those by Mark above that are really scary. They just don't get it, and lash out at others who have a different opinion than their own. The sooner we can rid the government of that type of mentality, the sooner we will be back on the road continuing to be the greatest, most freedom-loving people/country in this world's history. Please keep up the good work, and CONTINUE to post your PATRIOTIC messages! There are more of "us" than "them" and we need to quit being the silent majority!
Bob Rose on January 7, 2011 3:55 PMHi Tim,
Lisanne Libner on January 10, 2011 1:10 PMI have heard a lot of great things about you, your writing and your initiatives through Doug Kingman (perhaps he has told you about me). This is the first opportunity I have had to read your newsletter and look at your Site. I like it a lot. You write very, very well and your energy and enthusiasm comes through clearly, leaving the reader no other choice but to be totally inspired. I look forward to reading more, and hopefully meeting you at some point! For now, Uncle Sam is my escort. After I get that paperwork out of the way, I look forward to spending more time learning about SiteBuilder, hammocks and layer cakes. Thank you for all that you do. Kind Regards, Lisanne
Like many others commenting here, I received your "firepit" newsletter and have signed up. Glad to see we are on the same page politically.
Bob Chilcoat on January 11, 2011 2:52 PMI have often thought of starting an online business, but just never found the right fit. I am turning 75 next month, and have been, for the last 10 years or so putting my knowledge of computers to good use. I retired from a large computer manufacturer and had always worked with mainframes. However, I bought my first PC in 1981, and been "fooling" with them ever since. I have turned this hobby into a way to earn some money. It started with fixing friends computers, both hardware and software (including getting rid of a lot of malware). By word of mouth, other people starting calling me to fix their computers, including some small businesses. The cost for a fix by so called professionals is outlandish, and my fees are less than half of those. If I can't fix it, there is no charge. Over the years, there has only been one of those. I also guide some people over the phone for fixes with no charge. I backup my work with the words, "if it doesn't work for you, I will fix it at no additional charge".
I don't advertise, no website charges, and don't go looking for business, they call me. I make house-calls and let the folks watch what I am doing. Unlike an online business, I get to meet some really nice people.
